The Logic Behind the Tool

  1. State-Based Cost Averages: The tool uses a representative database of monthly costs for different care levels across various US regions.
  2. Inflation of Care Costs: Long-term care costs traditionally rise faster than general inflation. The tool applies a 3–4% annual inflation rate to future care costs.
  3. Depletion Logic (The “Burn Rate”):
    • Remaining Assets = Current Assets - (Monthly Care Cost - Monthly Fixed Income)
    • It calculates how many months it takes for the “Nest Egg” to hit zero for each care type.
  4. Care Level Definitions:
    • In-Home Care: Based on 44 hours/week of professional help.
    • Assisted Living: Private one-bedroom in a facility.
    • Nursing Home: Semi-private room with 24/7 skilled nursing.
